The CannTeen Study: Cannabis use disorder, depression, anxiety, and psychotic-like symptoms in adolescent and adult cannabis users and age-matched controls. Journal of Psychopharmacology, 2022; 026988112211089 DOI: 10.1177/02698811221108956

The study, published today in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, found that adolescents who used cannabis were no more likely to have higher levels of subclinical depression or anxiety than adults who use cannabis, nor were they more vulnerable than adult users to the associations with psychotic-like symptoms.

These findings build on a separate study by the same team, published recently in Psychopharmacology that found adolescents were not more vulnerable to associations between chronic cannabis use and cognitive impairment.

Lead author Dr Will Lawn (UCL Clinical Psychopharmacology Unit and Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King?s College London) said: ?There is a lot of concern about how the developing teenage brain might be more vulnerable to the long-term effects of cannabis, but we did not find evidence to support this general claim.

?Cannabis addiction is a real issue that teenagers should be aware of, as they appear to be much more vulnerable to it than adults.

?On the other hand, the impact that cannabis use has during adolescence on cognitive performance or on depression and anxiety may be weaker than hypothesised.

?But we also replicated previous work that if someone becomes addicted to cannabis, that may increase the severity of subclinical mental health symptoms. Given adolescents are also at a greater risk of experiencing difficulties with mental health than adults, they should be proactively discouraged from regular cannabis use.?

The findings in both papers come from the CannTeen study, funded by the Medical Research Council, which is comparing the effects of regular cannabis use among adolescents and adults, while also comparing to age-matched controls (non-users of cannabis), a completely novel design.

The study involved 274 participants, including 76 adolescents (aged 16 and 17) who used cannabis one to seven days per week, alongside similar numbers of adult (aged 26-29) users, and teenage and adult control (comparison) participants, who all answered questions about their cannabis use over the last 12 weeks and responded to questionnaires commonly used to assess symptoms of mental ill health. The cannabis users in the study, on average, used it four times per week. The adolescent and adult users were also carefully matched on gender, ethnicity, and type and strength of cannabis.

The researchers found that adolescent cannabis users were three and a half times as likely to develop severe ?cannabis use disorder? (addiction) than adult users, a finding which is in line with previous evidence using different study designs. Cannabis use disorder is defined by symptoms such as, among others: cravings; cannabis use contributing to failures in school or work; heightened tolerance; withdrawal; interpersonal problems caused by or exacerbated by cannabis use; or intending to cut back without success. The researchers found that 50% of the teenage cannabis users studied have six or more cannabis use disorder symptoms, qualifying as severe cannabis use disorder.

Among people of any age, previous studies have found that roughly 9-22% of people who try the drug develop cannabis use disorder, and that risk is higher for people who tried it at a younger age. The increased risk of cannabis addiction during adolescence has now been robustly replicated.

The researchers say that adolescents might be more vulnerable to cannabis addiction because of factors such as increased disruption to relationships with parents and teachers, a hyper-plastic (malleable) brain and developing endocannabinoid system (the part of the nervous system that THC in cannabis acts upon), and an evolving sense of identity and shifting social life.

Adolescent users were more likely than adult users or adolescent non-users to develop psychotic-like symptoms, but the analysis revealed that this is because all adolescents, and all cannabis users, are more likely to newly develop psychotic-like symptoms, rather than cannabis affecting the teenagers differently to adults. In other words, there was no adolescent vulnerability, as the increased risk of psychotic-like symptoms was an additive effect (of the two already known risk factors for psychotic-like symptoms, cannabis use and adolescent age), rather than an interaction between age and cannabis use. The researchers say this fits in with prior evidence that cannabis use may increase the likelihood of developing a psychotic disorder such as schizophrenia, but they warn their study did not investigate the risk of clinical psychosis or schizophrenia.

The researchers found that neither teenage nor adult cannabis users were more likely to develop depressive or anxiety symptoms than non-users. Only the adolescents that have severe cannabis use disorder had worse mental health symptoms, but the researchers caution that the small sample size for this group limits their confidence in this finding.

The separate study published in Psychopharmacology found that cannabis users were no more likely to have impaired working memory or impulsivity. Cannabis users were more likely to have poor verbal memory (remembering things said to you); this effect was the same in adults and teenagers, so again there was no adolescent vulnerability. However, the researchers caution that cannabis use could impact school performance during a key developmental stage of life.

The researchers caution that these findings were cross-sectional (only looking at one time point), and that longitudinal analyses of how their participants changed over time are ongoing.

Senior author Professor Val Curran (UCL Clinical Psychopharmacology Unit, UCL Psychology & Language Sciences) said: ?Our findings suggest that schools should be teaching pupils more about the risk of addiction to cannabis, which has been neglected in drugs education. Becoming addicted to cannabis is a serious problem in itself, but it can also increase the likelihood of other mental health problems. Teenagers should therefore be informed of their greater risk of addiction.?

Open letter from several organizations, including the LDH, to the attention of Jean-Michel Blanquer, Minister of National Education, Youth and Sports

Paris, January 18, 2022

Minister,

We alerted you in June 2021, as well as public opinion, to the project of initiation and experimentation within schools of a practice called ” mindfulness meditation »[1] (MPC) proposed by an esoteric lobby, and its risks on children, placed under the responsibility and protection of National Education.

If, following the protests expressed by the League of Human Rights (LDH) and the actors committed against sectarian phenomena, the project in its initial form was abandoned, we have been seized of its reappearance in a disguised way since September in several colleges with the proliferation of ?relaxation workshops?, ?breathing, meditation, body scanning? exercises, on the initiative of the same instigators. The press echoed that the scientific council of National Education would have been seized in order to validate an experiment of such workshops within French schools from January 2022.

What is labeled MPC, or ?Mindfulness? in the United States and then introduced in Europe, is a very specific technique whose promotion and financing throughout the world are organized by the American esoteric think-tank Mind and life institutea consortium associating highly controversial movements such as anthroposophy. The stated inventor of the MPC, or MindfulnessJohn Kabat-Zinn, is also one of the current leaders of the Esalen Institute, a major pharmacy New Age, matrix of many psycho-sects that have flooded the planet since the 1970s.

In France, the offensive is mainly relayed by the private structure Initiative mindfulness France which mentions it in its activity reports of local initiatives in 2019, concerning 425 public and private establishments. It would thus be nearly 23,000 children who would have “benefited”, through them, from an MPC program, or ” full presence “. We can only worry about these interventions and that they could have been implemented without control from your ministry, as well as without precise information and the express agreement of the parents of the children concerned.

At the same time, from 2018 to 2020, the Interministerial Mission for Vigilance and the Fight against Sectarian Abuses (Miviludes) was the subject of twelve referrals for problems related to the MPC concerning minors[2].

The practice on minor children of a method which can lead to a conditioning with loss of critical spirit and subjugation of the individual therefore generates significant risks which cannot be neglected.

Attached to the role of National Education in the promotion of freedom of conscience, in the prevention of sectarian phenomena and the protection of children placed under its responsibility, we renew our deepest concerns about these experiments, and ask you to intervene. to put an end to it without delay in order to refuse both the entryism of a most dubious esoteric influence group into National Education and of a technique, the MPC, with uncertain and potentially risky consequences on psychic development children.

Because of the importance of the stakes, you will understand that we are making this letter public.

Pending the follow-up that you will bring to this request, we ask you to receive, Minister, the expression of our most distinguished greetings.

Noting a growing success of the writings of the mystic Maria Valtorta, the Doctrinal Commission of the Bishops of France issued a note on September 29 to recall the blacklisting of her main work. This one tells details and anecdotes about the life of Jesus absent from the Gospels.

The Gospel as revealed to me “. This is the title of the major work of Maria Valtorta (1897-1961), which retraces the life of Christ with a profusion of details and anecdotes that Jesus himself would have revealed to her. Having become a true bestseller, the work has been sold since its publication in 1956 in more than 4 million volumes worldwide and translated into 27 languages. A worrying success for the bishops of France, whose Doctrinal Commission published a note on September 29, 2021 to recall the controversial status of the story of this mystical woman.

?The dissemination of the writings of Maria Valtorta has been intensifying for at least two years. We meet, in addition to the faithful who are nourished by these texts, priests who spread these writings, Maria Valtorta reading groups whose activities are in certain places announced in the parish bulletins, note the bishops. Associations and Internet sites broadcast on a large scale emails commenting on the Sunday Gospel with texts by Maria Valtorta. » The problem underlined by the episcopate: ?The faithful in good faith assume that this work is approved by the Church. »

Maria Valtorta’s book put on the Index

On the contrary, ?a clear judgment? against this book was pronounced by the Magisterium of the Church, the bishops recall. On December 16, 1959, he indeed “put [l?ouvrage] to the Index?. In its commentary commenting on the decree, the Vatican press organ (Osservatore Romano) pointed above all to the literary value of the text and the puzzling attitude of Jesus and Mary as they are presented. They defined the work strictly as a “life of Jesus badly romanticized”.

The bishops insist: this disapproval of the work was reiterated on January 31, 1985 by Joseph Ratzinger, then prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. They quote his statement at the time: “Although abolished, the Index retains all its moral value, which is why it is not considered appropriate to distribute and recommend a work whose condemnation was not taken lightly, but on reasoned arguments in order to to neutralize the damage that such a publication can cause to the faith of the poorest. » The Episcopate also recalls that Joseph Ratzinger had demanded from the publisher on May 6, 1992, through the voice of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, ?not to publish the writings of Maria Valtorta without explicitly indicating that they are not of supernatural origin?. The letter stated that the writings of this woman ?must be considered simply as the literary forms used by the author to tell, in his own way, the life of Jesus. »

Distinguishing the Word of God from Private Revelation

The whole point of the note is to?to help the faithful to clearly distinguish the Word of God from private revelations?, as recommended by the 2008 synod on the word of God, the bishops specified. These private revelations do not have the role of “‘to complete’ the definitive Revelation of Christ, but to help to live it more fully at a certain time in history”, they quoted.

?We observe in certain faithful of the Catholic Church an interest in private revelations, a taste for what appears new and manifests the actuality of Revelation through mystical graces or charisms, again underline the bishops in their note. This deserves to be accompanied by pastoral care which aims, not to quench the Spirit, but to enlighten the faithful on this distinction between the Word of God and private revelations?.

Conversation with God is not “pietist-individual”

Faced with this enthusiasm, the episcopate wished “recall an important truth of faith”: ?A person alone, without full communion with the Church and its pastors, cannot claim to be the depository of the Gospel or of tradition. For the fruit of the reception of the Word of God is the communion of the Church with the Father and the Son. » And to add: ?The ongoing conversation of the community of the faithful with God is not ‘pietist-individual.’ It is about God’s dialogue with the Bride of Christ, the holy Church. »

God pursues this ?dialogue with the Church? through ?various modes?, explained in the dogmatic constitution Dei Verbum and quoted by the bishops: ?either by the contemplation and study of believers [?]either by the interior intelligence that they experience of spiritual things, or by the preaching of those who, with the episcopal succession, received a certain charism of truth?. The bishops conclude by welcoming the “spiritual thirst” of the People of God and the ?need for reading, living food to encourage fervor and contemplation of the mystery of Christ?.

Maria Valtorta, bedridden since she was 37, is said to have written in one go, between Holy Thursday of 1943 and the year 1947, fifteen thousand pages without erasures on the revelations that Christ made to her about his life and his passion. She says that at the dawn of her 50th birthday, on February 3, 1943, Jesus would have given her this injunction: ?Take this work and do not seal it, but read it and have it read. »

While these may seem like distinctive, telltale symptoms, unfortunately, they are similar to those of a much different condition: alcohol-associated hepatitis. This challenges emergency department staff and other health care professionals who need to diagnose and treat patients with liver enzyme abnormalities and systemic inflammatory responses.

New Mayo Clinic research finds that machine-learning algorithms can help health care staff distinguish the two conditions. In an article published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, researchers show how algorithms may be effective predictive tools using a few simple variables and routinely available structured clinical information.

?This study was motivated by seeing many medical providers in the emergency department or ICU struggle to distinguish acute cholangitis and alcohol-associated hepatitis, which are very different conditions that can present similarly,? says Joseph Ahn, M.D., a third-year gastroenterology and hepatology fellow at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Dr. Ahn is first author of the study.

?We developed and trained machine-learning algorithms to distinguish the two conditions using some of the routinely available lab values that all of these patients should have,? Dr. Ahn says. ?The machine-learning algorithms demonstrated excellent performances for discriminating the two conditions, with over 93% accuracy.?

The researchers analyzed electronic health records of 459 patients older than age 18 who were admitted to Mayo Clinic in Rochester between Jan. 1, 2010, and Dec. 31, 2019. The patients were diagnosed with acute cholangitis or alcohol-associated hepatitis.

Ten routinely available laboratory values were collected at the time of admission. After removal of patients whose data were incomplete, 260 patients with alcohol-associated hepatitis and 194 with acute cholangitis remained. These data were used to train eight machine-learning algorithms.

The researchers also externally validated the results using a cohort of ICU patients who were seen at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston between 2001 and 2012. The algorithms also outperformed physicians who participated in an online survey, which is described in the article.

?The study highlights the potential for machine-learning algorithms to assist in clinical decision-making in cases of uncertainty,? says Dr. Ahn. ?There are many instances of gastroenterologists receiving consults for urgent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in patients who initially deny a history of alcohol use but later turn out to have alcohol-associated hepatitis. In some situations, the inability to obtain a reliable history from patients with altered mental status or lack of access to imaging modalities in underserved areas may force providers to make the determination based on a limited amount of objective data.?

If the machine-learning algorithms can be made easily accessible with an online calculator or smartphone app, they may help health care staff who are urgently presented with an acutely ill patient with abnormal liver enzymes, according to the study.

?For patients, this would lead to improved diagnostic accuracy and reduce the number of additional tests or inappropriate ordering of invasive procedures, which may delay the correct diagnosis or subject patients to the risk of unnecessary complications,? Dr. Ahn says.

It will be understood, the objective of Jazz in Vienna this year was to reconnect full pot with the city center. To no longer ensure that there is no longer a break between the ancient theater and the rest of the city, as was sometimes the case in the past.

It began after two years of absence, with the very welcome return of Cybèle, the beating heart of the Festival and its concerts throughout the day. Then by the jazzy dressing of the old center signifying to passing tourists that a Festival was taking place well within the walls of the city…

The third part of this return to the city center took place this Sunday, July 3 with the 1st Jazz Marathon Day in Vienna. No concert in the evening at the ancient theatre, but activities that are out of the ordinary at the Festival, which are intended to be very festive and have a Jazz connotation, throughout the day. All of this draining a large audience that was otherwise often not the one you usually come across at Jazz à Vienne, in this case, therefore in part, a new audience.

It all started at 6:45 a.m. this Sunday, with a ?Sunrise? concert on the Belvédère de Pipet, which overlooks the ancient theatre. With a rare program: that provided by Louise Jallu, a bandoneon player, an instrument rarely encountered in Jazz…

Hence a nice surprise. With her original music, halfway between Hector Piazzolla and Jazz, but dressed in the same nostalgia and haunting movement of the tango, Louise Jallu lit up the first steps of the day’s marathon with beautiful improvisations.

A crowd success, despite the very early hour. About sixty deckchairs had been deployed: nearly 200 people responded to this initiative which should be renewed in the future, at least we hope so.

No breakfast on site like last year at Pipet, but then a return to Cybèle where from 8 a.m. breakfast and brunch were offered by the team of the Viennese restaurant Mama-Trötter and its chef Ryma Prost – Romand. Again a 1st, highly appreciated by spectators descended from Pipet.

At the same time, at the municipal theater, a first experience of ?musical listening and self-perception? was taking place, combining Jazz and mindfulness meditation led by two specialists, Elisabeth Petit and Frédéric Charbaut.

The latter explained to the sixty or so meditators present how to listen to music by listening to it? truly and fully without letting your mind wander, by refocusing on yourself; and this, with the help of pieces by Dhafer Yousseff, Michel Portal, and even Miles Davis.

We were only there in the middle of the day’s marathon which continued in the afternoon with an original ?Battle BD?, pitting two cartoonists against each other on the big stage of Cybèle, the very large audience, again, the deciding.

A little later, to continue in innovation, the town hall square was transformed into a roller dance floor, with a glittery DJ, very 70s, officiating on the balcony.

A perfectly playful animation led by the master of roller dance, BBFX who gave the funky disco rhythm. Here again, a success of attendance for this original animation within the framework of Jazz à Vienne, making you want to put your skates back on and attracting the most experienced roller dancers as well as beginners…

Tomorrow, Monday, July 4, the Festival will return to normal after this unbridled day with Gregory Porter, in the evening on the stage of the ancient theater and the launch of the Tremplin Rezzo intended to designate the best young Jazz formation from seven regions of France… The show must go on?

Personne ne me répondait.

?Comment cela m?a affecté??

After an hour and a half of grandiose spectacle, Muse’s show is coming to an end. A huge fireworks display lights up the Malsaucy sky, which is beginning to be covered in heavy clouds. Find pictures of the concert here.

8:05 p.m.- It’s time to take stock: the 2023 edition is already scheduled

The Eurockéennes are coming to an end, it’s time to take stock. During a press conference, Matthieu Pigasse, president of the festival, once again sends thoughts to the 17-year-old young man injured in the storm, as well as to his family.

Saturday and Sunday are sold out

Several thousand tickets for Saturday were sold after the cancellation episode. Saturday and Sunday are full.

Official attendance figures: 35,000 Saturday and 25,000 Sunday for the Muse concert (the gauge being limited to this figure)

?I salute the team spirit of the Eurockéennes, their composure, their cohesion, their courage, their resilience. The team went even beyond what can be expected of them in these conditions,? continues Matthieu Pigasse. ?If we opened on Saturday, it is thanks to them, to the volunteers, as well as to all those who offered their help, including local residents and neighbours. »

?We look to the future?

Jean-Paul Roland takes the microphone in turn. ?We are quickly looking to the future?, declares the director of the Eurockéennes. ?I hope for a pooling of festivals: that is to say work with ?friendly? festivals on stage rentals, technical teams which are increasingly difficult to find. »

The “Secondary residence” editions will be multiplied. The next one is scheduled for September.in the Eurocks hall, with a capacity of 5,000 people.

? The next edition of the Eurockéennes is already scheduled. If the format is not yet completely decided (three days, four days), appointment is given in the period between June 29 and July 2.

Less than 200 entries to the aid station

The prefect, Raphaël Sodini, salutes the behavior of the festival-goers present this weekend. “Less than 200 entries to the aid station, it’s derisory when more than 30,000 people are on site,” he notes.

The principle of the Place des chefs, a new space that brings together gourmet food-trucks, worked very well and will be renewed in 2023.

7:50 p.m.- All honey

We found Christophe Courberand, beekeeper in Châtenois-les-Forges, with a jar of honey from the festival.

Indeed, the Eurockéennes sponsored one of its hives; this made it possible to produce 150 jars of 125 grams of beautiful all-flower honey extracted at the beginning of June.

7:40 p.m.- The public always arrives, the food-trucks are taken by storm

While the space in front of the Grande Scène is already full, the public continues to flock to the Eurockéennes site.

In front of the food-trucks, the line gets longer before the Muse concert.

7 p.m.- Let’s go !

Two hours before the Muse concert, there is already a compact crowd in front of the stage. It is the young and talented Declan McKenna who launches hostilities in the first part.

Little Sunday jog

4:30 p.m.- The groupies are all in

The fiercest arrived at 9 a.m.: absolute Muse fans waited under a blazing sun for the festival doors to open. A device to refresh the public is put in place.

The party has been sold out for months. Muse was already scheduled to come in 2020, then in 2021, two editions canceled due to the health crisis.

4 p.m.- The Eurocks breakfast, to get in shape

To get ready, like every morning, we share a coffee and a croissant with you. On the program, yesterday’s recap and what you should not miss. Come on, let’s watch together.

The program of this last day of the festival is minimalist but it sends heavy. Two concerts are scheduled on the Main Stage: Declan McKenna at 7 p.m., Muse at 9 p.m.

3 p.m.- Summary of previous episodes

Thursday: after two canceled evenings, the Eurockéennes should resume, for good. But a terrible storm swept through the Malsaucy, caused significant damage, injured seven people and the site had to be evacuated.

Friday: it’s time for a meticulous survey of the damage, the visit of the expert, then the work organized “in commando mode” to restore the site, in particular the Main Stage which was the most affected. The party moves to the campsite.

Saturday: this time, it’s the right one: the safety commission comes in the morning and the green light is given. At 4 p.m., festival-goers return to the site. The concerts follow one another, the Eurockéens are in heaven. After the Simple Minds show, it’s time for the Eurotronik night: electro beats the rhythm on all the stages, simultaneously, until the very early hours.

Now, a new study led by School of Public Health researchers has found that risk of miscarriage may increase in the summer months.

Published in the journal Epidemiology, the study investigated seasonal differences in miscarriage risk and found that pregnant people in North America had a 44 percent higher risk of an early miscarriage (within eight weeks of pregnancy) in the summer months ? particularly in late August ? than they did six months earlier in February. Risk of miscarriage during any week of pregnancy was 31 percent higher in late August, compared to late February. Geographically, the results showed that pregnant people in the South and Midwest, where summers are hottest, were more likely to experience this loss in late August and early September, respectively.

These results suggest that additional research is needed to understand the potential roles of extreme heat and other hot-weather environmental or lifestyle exposures in unexpected pregnancy loss.

?Any time you see seasonal variation in an outcome, it can give you hints about causes of that outcome,? says study lead and corresponding author Amelia Wesselink, research assistant professor of epidemiology. ?We found that miscarriage risk, particularly risk of ?early? miscarriage before eight weeks of gestation, was highest in the summer. Now we need to dig into that more to understand what kinds of exposures are more prevalent in the summer, and which of these exposures could explain the increased risk of miscarriage.?

For the study, Wesselink and colleagues analyzed survey data on pregnancy loss among pregnancy planners in the SPH-based Pregnancy Study Online (PRESTO), an ongoing NIH-funded study since 2013 that enrolls women trying to conceive, and follows them from preconception through six months after delivery. All PRESTO participants provide baseline information on sociodemographics, lifestyle, and medical histories, and for this study, the researchers focused on 6,104 participants who conceived within 12 months of enrolling. They provided information about pregnancy loss of any kind, the date of loss, and the weeks of gestation at the time of the loss.

The findings begin to fill a gap in information on seasonal patterns in miscarriage. Previous studies have relied on clinical or fertility data, both of which likely overlook miscarriages that occur early in gestation (and thus, outside of the hospital) and among couples not experiencing fertility challenges.

While further research is needed to understand whether extreme heat and other specific exposures are causing these seasonal trends, the researchers say clinicians, policymakers, and climate experts can already take action to mitigate these potential risks.

?We know that heat is associated with higher risk of other pregnancy outcomes, such as preterm delivery, low birth weight, and stillbirth, in particular,? Wesselink says. ?Medical guidance and public health messaging ? including heat action plans and climate adaptation policies ? need to consider the potential effects of heat on the health of pregnant people and their babies.?

The study?s senior author was Kenneth Rothman, professor of epidemiology at SPH. The study was coauthored by Lauren Wise and Elizabeth Hatch, professors of epidemiology at SPH; Ellen Mikkelsen of Aarhus University in Denmark; David Savitz of Brown University School of Public Health; and Kipruto Kirwa of Tufts University School of Medicine.
