  1. Max Vanatta, Michael T. Craig, Bhavesh Rathod, Julian Florez, Isaac Bromley-Dulfano, Dylan Smith. The costs of replacing coal plant jobs with local instead of distant wind and solar jobs across the United States. iScience, 2022; 104817 DOI: 10.1016/j.isci.2022.104817

As of 2019, coal-fired electricity generation directly employed nearly 80,000 workers at more than 250 plants in 43 U.S. states. The new U-M study quantifies ? for the first time ? the technical feasibility and costs of replacing those coal jobs with local wind and solar employment across the country.

The study, published online Aug. 10 in the peer-reviewed journal iScience, concludes that local wind and solar jobs can fill the electricity generation and employment gap, even if it?s required that all the new jobs are located within 50 miles of each retiring coal plant.

Keeping employment local would increase the costs of replacing U.S. coal-plant workers by $83 billion, or 24%, nationwide, according to the study.

?These costs are significant in isolation but are small relative to annual U.S. power investments of $70 billion and to the total costs of transitioning the U.S. energy system away from fossil fuels, which have been estimated to be as high as $900 billion by 2030,? said study senior author Michael Craig of U-M?s School for Environment and Sustainability.

?Our results indicate that replacing lost jobs in coal-plant communities would modestly increase overall energy-transition costs while significantly furthering a just transition for one category of frontline communities,? said Craig, assistant professor of energy systems and an expert on power system emissions, operations and planning.

The U-M researchers say federal policymakers could introduce a new investment tax credit to help defray the costs of achieving local replacement of coal with renewables. Such a credit would only apply to wind and solar projects that are located near retiring coal plants and that employ retrained coal-plant workers.

Previous studies have concluded that aggressively mitigating climate change will require deep, sustained reductions in emissions of heat-trapping carbon dioxide gas.

Since electric power is the cheapest sector to decarbonize, much of the early U.S. emissions reductions have come from that sector, largely due to a shift from coal to natural gas in the electricity-generation mix.

Many decarbonization pathways retire most or all U.S. coal-fired power plants within the next 10 to 20 years. Electricity generation from those retired plants will need to be replaced by new, low-carbon sources of energy. Despite the rapid growth of wind and solar power in the United States, previous research has not quantified the feasibility and costs of replacing coal jobs with local wind and solar jobs across the country.

The new U-M study helps fill those research gaps. It applies a bottom-up optimization model to all coal plants in the contiguous United States and assumes a full phase-out of the U.S. coal-fired fleet by 2030.

As each coal plant retires, the model requires new renewable investments to replace the retiring plant?s electricity generation and employment. The model replaces coal-plant power generation and employment with wind and solar located within specified distances from retiring power plants.

The researchers analyzed three ?siting limits,? the maximum distance that replacement solar and wind facilities can be located relative to a retiring coal plant: 50 miles, 500 miles and 1,000 miles. The 50-mile limit approximates local solar and wind facilities and jobs that would not require relocation of coal plant workers, while the 1,000-mile limit includes jobs that would require relocation.

The researchers found that across most U.S. regions and siting limits, annual renewable energy employment fully replaces coal employment. In all regions and for all siting limits, retiring coal plants are replaced with a mix of wind and solar power.

Operations and maintenance jobs account for 57% to 92% of the replacement employment at wind and solar facilities while construction jobs play a lesser role, according to the study. O&M jobs include field technicians and administrative and management staff.

In the near term, coal-fired generation will likely continue to be replaced by a combination of new renewable investments and an increased reliance on existing natural gas plants. The current study did not look at the extent to which the use of existing assets will reduce renewable-energy jobs. In addition, the current study did not assess the impact of workforce retraining requirements for coal-plant workers.

The first author of the iScience study is Max Vanatta of the U-M School for Environment and Sustainability. Other authors are Bhavesh Rathod of SEAS, Julian Florez of the U-M Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering, Isaac Bromley-Dulfano of the U-M Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and Dylan Smith of U-M?s Applied Physics Program.

Funding for the research was provided by the Idaho National Laboratory?s Emerging Energy Markets Analysis Initiative and by the U-M School for Environment and Sustainability.

Arnold Schwarzenegger recently turned 75, but with an upcoming calendar full of action projects, it’s clear he still has a lot to offer his audience. The former bodybuilder, protagonist of terminator either predator, he continues to train daily in the gym.

?The way I train has changed considerably from those five-hour training sessions when I was a bodybuilder to a more maintenance and exercise form now,? says Schwarzenegger. What hasn’t changed is the actor’s dedication to fitness, spending an hour and a half in the gym or on the bike, no matter how busy his schedule is.?

Men’s Health US spoke with Schwarzenegger from the set of his new Netflix spy series, FUBAR; about his dedication in the gym, his illustrious career as a bodybuilder and movie star, and how he still dreams of making another Conan the barbarian, the remake of the movie that launched his career in Hollywood.

How do you train now and how have your routines changed?

My current exercise routine includes bicycling every day for about 45 minutes to an hour. I continue to exercise with weights for half an hour. The training itself has come a long way since I was competing in bodybuilding, when I needed to work out about five hours a day. Priorities change as you age, as does training, moving from those five hours of hard work to a more maintenance-friendly form of more moderate exercise. The thing about bodybuilding and weight training is that you can adapt it and sculpt your body, and it doesn’t matter how old you are. (Check here how much exercise you should do per day according to your age).

Do you keep a regular meal schedule to support your training?

Right now I’m recording this series FUBAR in Canada and I went to train yesterday at 11 am after working until dawn. I managed to get up in time for a quick workout before they picked me up. That means the meal times are also changed. You get your food from the movie company when they ship it to you. Something light for breakfast and lunch may not arrive until 8pm. When more like it is at dinner, with many calories.

How do your famous protein shakes fit into that equation?

Because of how crazy my schedule is, I always have my shaker full of shake. I put some fruit with some of my protein powder and shake it up and drink that throughout the day. I started making protein drinks when I was 15 years old. The first thing I bought with the money I earned was a large mixer. I put milk, yeast, skim milk powder and a little honey. I mixed that up and it tasted like shit, but I always had my protein drinks with me, going back to the early ’70s when I trained for five hours a day so I could compete in bodybuilding, all while working and attending a community college in Santa Monica. I carried my protein powder shake everywhere. (Here, summarized, the 20 best protein shakes for breakfast).

How does bodybuilding transcend into other aspects of your life?

Bodybuilding is like a game of chess. There are millions of moves to win in chess, and the same goes for bodybuilding. There are millions of exercises, training principles, supplements and ways to gain muscle. There are ways to lose weight, gain weight, maintain your weight, or have more energy. As a whole, bodybuilding has been one of the greatest benefits to human physical development in the last 50 years. If you think only of the United States and how many gyms have opened in that time, around 120,000, it’s tremendous.

‘Conan the Barbarian’ was released 40 years ago and has become a classic. How was the training for that project?

I had just won Mr. Olympia for the seventh time in Sydney, Australia, and literally two months later we were on set filming Conan the barbarian. The director, John Milius, came to the competition and told me that he wanted it to be “less defined” because that body was not very natural for the time. So during those two months, I changed the way I trained and my diet to become more complete. He wanted to look like a man who had gotten his muscles from hard work in the world and not from very specific and organized training in the gym. I made the adjustments I needed to make. Milius was very happy and I looked exactly the way he wanted. Then when I did the sequel to Conan the Destroyer, and director Richard Fleischer came to tell me that he still wanted me to bulk up but be more defined at the same time. So that’s what I did, and I defined myself much more than in the first one. (Schwarzenegger and the Conan sequel: are there real options?).

On May 4, InSight Crime published the report ?The Cocaine Revolution in Venezuela?, a document that politicians, union and trade union leaders, academics and university professors, social leaders and citizens concerned about the fate of Venezuela should read. Although it may not be necessary to introduce it, I remind you here that InSight Crime is a non-governmental organization, headquartered in Colombia, specialized in investigating and analyzing the phenomena of organized crime in Latin America and the Caribbean. I will take my recommendation even further: whoever has the opportunity should look on YouTube or the organization’s own page for the video of the conversation between Jeremy McDermott (executive director and co-founder of InSight Crime), journalist Sebastiana Barráez, academic Angélica Durán Martínez and journalist Javier Mayorca, shared to comment and contribute ideas in relation to the report. This article is not intended to replace reading the report: on the contrary, my opinion is that the material, available at https://es.insghtcrime.orgmust be read, discussed and disseminated.

Among the many aspects pointed out, the one that could be most alarming is the content in chapter 1 of the material: Venezuela, which until now has been primarily a transit zone between the cocaine production centers -in Colombia- and its main markets -The United States and Europe- is also becoming a production center, that is, a country where coca is grown and where it is prepared in laboratories for export and consumption. In Apure state, Rómulo Gallegos and Pedro Camejo municipalities, and in Zulia state, Catatumbo, Jesús María Semprún and Machiques de Perijá municipalities, there are plantations, some of which have industrial dimensions. Simultaneously, with the information available so far, in the two municipalities indicated in Apure, and in Jesús María Semprún, there are processing centers.

That this news is so disturbing is mainly due to the potential of this criminal category. Let’s think about this, as, in a way, the report and the panelists suggest: in a country with the economy on the ground, without institutions that respond to the needs of families; in a country where there are political and military sectors committed to drug trafficking; where organized crime expresses itself in various ways -pranes, collectives, narco-guerrillas, civilian or uniformed gangs-; where the men of the field are subjected to sales tax and extortion; where inflation makes salaries that are not dollarized useless; where there are areas that are not under the control of the State or the law, but rather are territories where the establishment of narco-guerrillas has been allowed, the probability that coca production and its chemical transformation into ready-to-use drugs will expand by the border states, it is not very high but very high.

And this is where it is essential to repeat the warning made by the journalist Sebastiana Barráez in the aforementioned panel: once the economy of coca plantations and laboratories is installed in a country, its elimination is, in practice, almost impossible: very costly economically, socially and police-wise. As if it were a curse, the plantations that are eradicated one day, reappear the next. The laboratories that are destroyed are replaced by others. An endless circle is established, always accompanied by an upsurge of violence and death.

The other factor that I must mention refers to the characteristics of the drug trafficking business in Venezuela. The InSight Crime report maintains that the so-called Cartel of the Suns does not have a centralized structure like other cartels, but rather is a network distributed throughout Venezuelan territory, the product of a kind of distribution of zones or regions that, from the highest level of the regime, it has been done so that high officials and military chiefs can obtain income and advantages – let’s not forget, with the drug trafficking business -, in exchange for a firm political loyalty and a commitment to keep Maduro in power.

The report reads the following: ?The central purpose of the Cartel of the Suns remains the same as always: to help a Chavista president cling to power. However, the challenges facing Nicolás Maduro have changed as the country has plunged into economic and political crisis. The president heads a nearly bankrupt state, and is under constant pressure from political opponents at home, abroad, and even within Chavismo and the Venezuelan state itself. In this context, the Cartel de los Soles has changed to meet these challenges, from a loosely knit trafficking network to an elaborate patronage system used to distribute the wealth of drug trafficking among those who, in the eyes of Maduro, are necessary to maintain the stability of the regime. Like Chavez, Maduro knows that he must keep the military on his side if he wants to remain president. But unlike his predecessor, Maduro has no money to pay them: the collapse of the Venezuelan economy has seen rank-and-file military salaries fall to less than US$20 a month.?

These two issues are just part of the development contained in the report, invaluable for the amount of information it offers on the expansion of the scourge, its distribution in the country, specific cases such as the Paraguaná Cartel, accusations against high-ranking officials such as Tareck El Aissami , the ways of acting of the operators and other relevant matters. I repeat: it must be read and distributed.

Most people recognise that fungi come in an assortment of shapes and sizes. However, these differences, often referred to as the disparity of a group, had never been analysed collectively.

Researcher Thomas Smith, who conducted the study while at Bristol?s School of Earth Sciences, explained: ?Prior to our analyses, we didn?t know how this variety was distributed across the different types of fungi. Which groups are the most varied when considering all parts of the fungal body plan? Which are the least? How has this variety accumulated and diminished through time? What has shaped these patterns in disparity? These are the questions we sought to answer.?

What they found was that fungal disparity has evolved episodically through time, and that the evolution of multicellularity in different fungi appears to open the door for greater morphological variety. They saw increases in disparity associated with both the emergence of the first multicellular fungi, and then the evolution of complex fruiting bodies such as mushrooms and saddles in dikaryotic species. These fungi are defined by the inclusion of a dikaryon, a cell with two separate nuclei, in their life cycles.

The main implication is that these results align with those of analyses of animal disparity. Both kingdoms present clumpy distributions of anatomical variety which have evolved intermittently through time.

Mr Smith said: ?The world of fungi is defined by bright colours, strange shapes, and stranger anatomies. Our analyses demonstrate that this breath-taking anatomical variety has evolved in bursts, driven by evolutionary increases in multicellular complexity.?

The next step is to combine the datasets characterising the disparity of these two kingdoms and keep expanding the taxonomic net, starting with plants and algae. Nevertheless, this fungal dataset brings the team one step closer to characterising, visualising, and analysing the disparity of all multicellular life.

If what excites you most about a series is not related to its present, but to what it promises for future seasons and related projects; there is a problem. ?hawk eye? from Marvel Studios has many positive elements, but the penultimate episode of the series makes us wonder if this story is nothing more than a trailer for several hours.

Next, SPOILERS for ?Hawkeye? 1×05, ?Ronin?:

The plot

Three threads of history: we learn more about Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), who lost five years of her life with Thanos’ snap. Upon returning to this world, she discovered that her sister, Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), had died. And now she seeks revenge on who she believes was her killer, Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner).

READ ALSO: ?Spiderman: Far From Home?: an imperfect magic trick that leaves the way ready for ?Spiderman: No Way Home?

Clint, understanding that the situation is getting out of hand, goes directly to Maya López (Alaqua Cox) and confesses that it was he, like Ronin, who murdered his father; but that he did it by order of the ?uncle?. Furthermore, if she continues to persecute him and his family, she will have no qualms about acting lethally.

For her part, Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), after being wounded in recent combat, weighs her options: follow the path of the heroes despite the fact that she will only get pain, or continue the normal life proposed by the security firm of his mother?

criticism

The best of “hawk eye? 1×05 does not originate from the actions of Clint or Kate throughout the series. A character from another franchise has to enter, in this case Yelena Belova from ?Black Widow?; to inject interest into the story. And the best scene is precisely when the killer visits Kate to ask her about Clint Barton. Florence Pugh handles the charm of the character well, which she sustains as much for his humor as for how menacing he is; and she goes from one extreme to another with ease. Pugh represents the confidence of someone who knows a killing machine.

Kate and Yelena’s conversation works for two reasons: chemistry and script. They are both very good at their jobs, you can tell they have had a good time filming together. And because Kate, despite being at a disadvantage against a professional assassin, can empathize with her and, without judging her, show her other points of view. Maybe because he recognized in Belova’s eyes what Clint saw in Natasha’s when he was about to kill her years ago: that she wants to leave the life of crime.

There are no major novelties, except for the plot, in the scenes of Clint Barton and Maya López; and Clint’s monologue to Natasha in front of the Battle of New York memorial (she never had a grave), where he shows a seldom-seen vulnerable side. The story points to a conflict within the diver mafia, as well as the motive behind why the ?guy? wants the watch. And here we come to the end of the episode, which is not a surprise for those who have been keeping an eye on the leaks and which also promises a lot for future projects. The “guy” is Kingpin (Vincent D’onofrio), one of the most acclaimed characters from when Marvel made series on Netflix.

1660656777 358 Hawkeye Its time to admit it this is not such

With only one episode to go, ?hawk eye? has to resolve Yelena’s vendetta, Jack Duquesne’s (Tony Dalton) role in the clock affair, what Maya will do now that she knows the Kingpin hired Ronin to kill her father, and how Kate will deal with the fact that that his own mother, Eleanor (Vera Farmiga), ordered Clint killed. Plots are not lacking, but those that include the protagonists, the ‘Eyes of the hawk’ that give the series its name, are not very captivating. They are the heroes, we know they will come out well. Hence, the most interesting thing is that among people from other franchises.

As much as Florence Pugh and Vincent D’onofrio are tremendous actors, that they are the point of interest now that the series is over, speaks ill of how the story has developed so far. The series has its charm, but it’s more of a “meet the new faces that will change the Marvel Universe” commercial than a story on its own. Hardly, “Hawkeye” can hit the target when it only has one arrow, one episode, in reserve.

The Street Fighter franchise has had dozens of titles in its 35-year history, which can make it more difficult to know which is the best game in the entire series. Nonetheless, we jumped in the pool and ranked our top 10.

Street Fighter was not always a resounding success within the community of video game. The original game used a rather strange button layout, and it was very complicated when it came to executing special moves. But, ever since Street Fighter II was released in arcades, the genre exploded in popularity, and the franchise branched off in different directions that no one could have expected.

Of course, in our list you will not see neither Street Fighter II: Super Turbo nor Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers.

Let us begin!

10. Street Fighter: The Movie (1995)

The 90’s were a busy time. Street Fighter: The Last Stand starring Jean-Claude Van Damme might not have been a critical success, but it was released at a time when the franchise was reaching mass. Not to miss out on the opportunity, Capcom hired Incredible Technologies, an American company, to develop the game as they had previous experience working on Time Killers and with digitized graphics, which put the actors in the game.

In this form, the game introduces Jean-Claude Van Damme and Ming Na Wen. In addition, it gives us a very Mortal Kombat-style game. However, the title had quite a bit of trouble getting digitized, and the animations looked very rough. The resulting product was a critical and commercial failure. Although it retains some charm due to the actors and the novelty of the title as a whole.

9. Street Fighter EX (1996)

Street Fighter EX

The 3D era in the late 1990s and early 2000s saw many franchises move towards polygonal titles. Capcom wanted their own version for their first Street Fighter franchise.

Street Fighter EX maintains the franchise’s six-button layout and features classic characters like Ryu, Guile, and Acquaintance. However, Arika also included original characters, such as the fan-favorite Skullomania.

However, despite having dynamic camera angles and super combos alongside the combo break mechanic, this game feels like the black sheep of the franchise.

8.Street Fighter (1987)

Street Fighter is the one that started it all and focused on elaborate and tactical fights with a 1vs1. The game centered around a single eight-way joystick for movement and two larger buttons for punches and kicks whose movements differed depending on how hard you pressed them.

However, this version was very unpopular and Capcom decided to release a six-button version instead, giving rise to the modern Street Fighter control system. However, it’s a bit tricky to replay due to how clunky it feels at times.

7.Street Fighter Alpha (1995)

Street Fighter Alpha was the first follow-up to the highly successful Street Fighter II and serves as a prequel to the original title. In it we are introduced to fast movement speed, air lock, and something called Alpha Combos, where you can effectively cancel an attack. in other.

Another mechanic, called Alpha Counters, allowed you to predict and punish an opponent’s attack, sending them to the ground. Finally, Street Fighter Alpha also divided the Super Combo gauge into three segments, introducing the concept of gauge management.

This allowed for deeper strategies against opponents compared to previous titles.

6.Street Fighter Alpha 2 (1996)

Like its predecessor, Street Fighter Alpha 2 has quite a few new mechanics for players to enjoy, all while running on the fantastic CPS-II system. Alpha 2 added an additional alpha counter for each character, as well as adding a “custom combo” system.

This replaced the chain combos in the original title and generally resulted in a much more balanced experience as a whole. It also managed to introduce Sakura to the franchise.

5. Ultra Street Fighter 4 (2014)

This game has it all. It incorporated new mechanics like Double Ultra Combo, which allowed you to select Ultra Combos. The same went for Red Focus which soaks up multiple hits at once for more tactical freedom.

The gameplay was still primarily focused on setting up cancel combos which encouraged high level play. Some of the matches that took place in Ultra Street Fighter IV were amazing at big events like EVO.

Additionally, Ultra introduced five characters, including Elena, who dominated many top-tier stages with her healing abilities.

4.Street Fighter Alpha 3 (1998)

Street Fighter Alpha 3 didn’t look too different visually from other Alpha titles, but it did come with a great roster of characters. Here you can select three different fighting styles, called ?ISM?, which change the gameplay depending on what we choose.

Similarly, guard strikes were also introduced, where you are vulnerable to attacks if you guard for too long. In addition to this, we also got the introduction of a ?Fair Defense? system.

Each of the three styles, in addition to the character roster, makes Street Fighter Alpha 3 one of the best games in the franchise.. In addition, it is still played among many fans.

3. Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo (1994)

Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo kicked things up a notch for the hit fighting game. With additional modes that speed up the pace of the game. He also introduced Super Combos, which is a powerful version of a special move for all of his characters. It also had the addition of air combos and launchers for momentum, which expanded the heights of strategy and gameplay at the time.

This title is a foundational game for the franchise, and it feels fantastic to play today.

2. Street Fighter V: Champion Edition (2020)

Street Fighter 5 had a very bumpy launch. However, it became one of the best titles in the franchise thus far. This time around, it focuses on a slightly slower pace and a change to be a neutral focused game. Likewise, Champion Edition included another V-Trigger for all characters and ongoing gameplay enhancements that continually change the meta in new and interesting ways.

With a roster of over 40 characters, Champion Edition has the largest roster in the franchise, surpassing even Ultra’s. While it’s a shame the netcode could be a bit better. This game has been quietly improving for years and it shows just how fantastic the franchise can be, through the options and characters available to each.

1. Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike (1999)

Street Fighter 3rd Strike changed the series’ dated image with a total rebalance through aesthetics, a handful of new characters, and an incredible soundtrack.

In parallel, it is also adorned with incredible character animations and an iconic parry system that brought us one of the most iconic moments in esports: Daigo’s stop from the 2004 EVO. The best part? We can still play the title and it has become one of the best fighting games ever made. All of this makes it the best Street Fighter game in its 35-year history.

The writer of Amnesia and SOMA is behind the return of this legendary survival horror.

Although today it is a name unfairly forgotten by the general public, Alone in the Dark is one of the great horror classics that defined the way of creating this kind of scary adventures, with Resident Evil being the one that best took advantage of its spirit. So it’s quite a joy that almost 20 years later we can return to the scary mansion Derceto Manor to relive the history caused nightmares to thousands of players so many years ago.

THQ Nordic has presented this “reinterpretation” of the classic Alone in the Dark that they themselves define as “a love letter to the original”, while promising to respect everything that made the game designed by frederick raynal. To make such a difficult undertaking possible, the development of the game has been entrusted to Pieces Interactive, which has in its ranks the screenwriter of the fantastic Amnesia and SOMA, Mikael Hedberg.

As in the original, Alone in the Dark allows us to enjoy its story from the perspective of two different characters, detective Edward Carnby and the young Emily Hartwood, with whom we will enjoy unique situations and conversations. “You are definitely going to want to play with both characters,” the team behind Alone in the Dark told 3D Games.

A tribute to the horror of the 90s

We want to expand on things that the original never had a chance to do.Set in Louisiana 1920s, Alone in the Dark takes us to a sinister mansion in which its owner, Jeremy Hartwood, has committed suicide, leaving many questions in the air. Whether you play the detective or Hartwood’s niece, your mission is the same: find out what happened, but along the way, you’ll see that your nightmare has only just begun. Considered the father of survival horror, in its day Alone in the Dark surprised by successfully combining the combat with the puzzles and the explorationwithout neglecting history, highly influenced by the work of Lovecraft.

Although there were fights in the game, they were quite rare, prioritizing the moments of maximum tension that forced you to escape from nightmare creatures. This reinterpretation of the classic wants to stay true to that philosophy, although it seems that there will be more monsters and a little more action. “We want to expand things that the original never had the opportunity to do,” the main person in charge of the project told us, anticipating that we will have new locations to explore outside of the mansion.

There will also be new puzzles and tons of secrets to discover, so exploration will be key in the new Alone in the Dark. To give life to the new creatures from which we will have to escape -and they promise to be terrifying- the artist has been counted on Guy Daviswho has worked on some of the Hellboy stories.

A chance to play the new Alone in the Dark

At the gates of Gamescom 2022, THQ Nordic confirmed that those attending the event will have the opportunity to enjoy an exclusive demo of the new Alone in the Dark. The peculiarity of this prologue is that it will be played by little Grace Saunders, one of the protagonists of Alone in the Dark 2. Surprisingly, this story will not be included in the final game, so it remains to be seen if we will have other opportunities to play the prologue to Alone in the Dark.

In development since 2019 with the Unreal Engine 4, the game is scheduled to be released on PC, Xbox Series and PS5 on a date yet to be determined.

Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2022; 22 (13): 8683 DOI: 10.5194/acp-22-8683-2022

During the COVID-19 lockdowns at the start of 2020, the research team flew over countries including Germany, the Benelux States, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and Italy ? i.e. large parts of Central, Western and Southern Europe. As part of the BLUESKY campaign, they recorded the mass and particle concentration of soot in the lower troposphere, with the aid of the research aircraft HALO (High Altitude and Long range), in both the horizontal and vertical planes. The team then compared the results with measurements from July 2017. At that time the researchers investigated the region under ?normal,? pre-coronavirus conditions, as part of the EMeRGe EU campaign.

The comparison shows a significant improvement in air quality as a result of the pandemic. On average the amount of soot in the lower troposphere in Southern and Western Europe dropped by 41 percent. This huge figure was verified with the aid of traffic data and information about fuel consumption during the lockdown periods. The researchers attribute this drop to two main factors: ongoing efforts to reduce soot emissions in Germany and Europe (three to nine percent), as well as limited travel as a result of the pandemic lockdowns, which accounted for between 32 and 38 percent. The comparison data were also entered into an Earth System Model in order to establish what the effects of reduced soot emissions in Europe might be on the climate in the long term.

Soot is harmful to health and contributes to global warming

The background is that soot close to the ground is not just a particularly harmful component of the fine particulates. In the atmosphere the tiny particles contribute to global warming, because they heat up due to their dark-colored surface and release heat into their surroundings. But in contrast to long-lasting greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, soot is short-lived and only stays in the atmosphere for a few days to weeks.

?Reduced soot emissions as a result of less burning of fossil fuels such as diesel, coal, oil, and wood would also improve the health of millions of people relatively quickly. Our measurements and model calculations also show that less soot in the atmosphere makes an important contribution to curbing climate change,? explains Mira Pöhlker from TROPOS in Leipzig. The atmospheric scientist, who also carries out research at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, hopes that some behavioral changes from the coronavirus period, such as more video conferencing, working from home, and the associated reduction in flights and commuting, will be maintained. ?I think that the pandemic has provided a trigger for a change in trends.?

Pöhlker and the team are currently working on a new study and also bringing psychologists on board. They want to find out whether offers such as the German 9-Euro-ticket could actually lead to an enduring change in people?s travel behavior. ?As well as a general reduction in traffic, it is also important to provide incentives to use modes of travel with lower emissions. In my opinion, heavily subsidized public transport is an important stimulus, and its effect on air pollution now needs to be quantified.?

Background to the study

In order to limit the rapid spread of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and to fight the pandemic, most European countries reacted with significant limitations on travel and economic activities in the first six months of 2020. The lockdowns reduced the burning of fossil fuels, one of the main sources of soot in the atmosphere, by around a third at the start of 2020. This decrease is attributed to 90 percent less air traffic in Europe and a significant reduction in road traffic. Emissions in Europe have never fallen so quickly in the decades since the Second World War. The lockdowns gave the atmospheric scientists a unique opportunity to accurately quantify air pollution over a large area with profiles of the distribution in the lower troposphere. (TA+SB)

Although it is true that the group known as the avengers They are one of the greatest superhero teams in the history of marvel comicssince it encompasses the largest number of diverse heroes that are spread throughout its universe, the Fantastic four are still the Marvel’s First Family and its importance is even greater. The Doctor Doom showed that they will always be more important, even than avengersat your own discretion.

Even though the Avengers are Marvel’s flagship team, Doctor Doom thinks the Fantastic 4 are better

The Fantastic four made their debut in marvel comics in the comic Fantastic Four #1 which was published in 1961 and made by the writer Stan Lee and the cartoonist jack kirby with an incredible cast of superheroes including reed richardsthe Invisible Womanthe Human Torch and the Stuff. It was at this time that a golden age would begin for the world of superheroes. New characters, groups and incredible stories were about to reach points that no one could ever imagine.

Two years later, the avengers they arrived in the comic avengers #1 with the characters of Hombre de Hierro, Thor, Ant Man, Wasp Y Hulk at the head forming this incredible group full of charisma. Although it is true that at first both teams were similar and emerged more or less at the same time, the Fantastic four stood out because, unlike the avengersthey were actually a royal family who did not have any kind of secret between them and who shared all their problems to solve them together.

However, one of the biggest differences we can find is that the avengers they have never been a fixed group of heroes. Over the years and due to different circumstances, the heroes were rotated within the avengers. However, the Fantastic four They’ve basically stayed the same since the team’s first appearance, making them a squad of irreplaceable characters who can’t be changed every few issues.

In Avengers #25of Stan Lee Y Don Heckthe avengers they were formed by Captain America, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. At that time they were facing Kang the Conqueror in a battle through the time stream when they met Doctor Doom. At this point, readers would be wondering why a titular villain tied to the Fantastic four would bother to spy on the avengersand not even who the original team was. Doctor Doom quickly summed up his intentions by explaining that he wanted to instill fear in the Fantastic four defeating the easiest team Marvelclearly referring to the avengers.

The Doctor Doom I just wanted to destroy them avengers to show the Fantastic four how really powerful it is. This means that the Doctor Doom just go to the avengers as pawns in a much larger game he is playing against what he considers to be the premier superhero team in Marvelthe Fantastic four. A few issues later in the comic series of the avengers The entire original lineup left the team because they wanted to retire and pass the baton to a completely different group of heroes. This instability caused the avengers appear weak and uncoordinated, making them the perfect victims for the plans of the Doctor Doom.

However, it was shown that the Doctor Doom I was very wrong because the avengers they were not a team to be lightly underestimated. After learning of the plans he had Doctor Doomthe Scarlet Witch used his power hex to destroy all the machinations of the Doctor Doom inside his villain lab.
